Chronic Lyme
Disease
What causes so many to suffer
even after getting treatment
for Lyme disease
Species of Borrelia bacteria are the cause of Lyme disease.
The bacteria is carried by ticks and transferred to humans by a bite.
Oral antibiotic treatment usually helps 90% of infected patients to recover completely.
However, in 10% of the cases, patients keep experiencing severe symptoms,
while tests don’t show any presence of the bacteria in the bloodstream.
The lack of evidence of infection tends to confuse many health practitioners
who tend to misdiagnose the condition.
What Causes Chronic Lyme?
Borrelia Debris
The Borrelia bacteria has a spiral shape.
Here starts the problem.
After recovery from the bacterial infection,
in approximately 10% of the cases,
some pieces of the bacteria debris
keep on circulating in the bloodstream.
Fibrinogen and Microclots
As the Borrelia debris travels through the bloodstream it gets tangled in an important protein called fibrinogen.
Fibrinogen is a thread-shaped protein. in case of an injury, the fibrinogen’s job is to bind the blood platelets together keeping them still and steady.
Once bacterial debris gets caught in a fibrinogen net, it weakens the protein causing it to break. Once the fibrinogen breaks it starts to float in the bloodstream creating microclots and these tiny particles provoke the symptoms patients experience. .
Chronic Lyme Symptoms
Shortness of Breath/ Long Haul
When microclots reach the lungs, fluids might start accumulating causing pulmonary edema and leading to shortness of breath with every exertion. For some patients, the condition is so severe they are bedbound for almost 23 hours a day.

Muscles and Joints Pain
It is not yet clear what is the mechanism that triggers the pain among PTLDS patients.
Though it is quite clear to science that PTLDS patients suffer from widespread musculoskeletal pain, including joint pain and muscle aches.
Brain Fog
Many patients report difficulties they never experienced before in actions requiring concentration like reading or watching TV. Children and students report struggling to do their homework. Science has yet to find the answer to how microclots cause that symptom.
Extreme Fatigue
PTLDS patients report a constant need to sleep. We are not yet sure how microclots cause extreme fatigue but different studies report fatigue symptoms as well.
Depression & Anxiety
Unfortunately, mental health is also damaged in Long-term Lyme disease conditions. Losing life quality and not being treated correctly can cause patients depression and anxiety.
